Some Effects of the Ionic Composition of the Extracellular Fluid on the Electrical Activity of the Cockroach Abdominal Nerve Cord

چکیده

The chemical composition of the fluid surrounding the cells of the central nervous system of Periplaneta has been shown to differ from that of the haemolymph, due to a Donnan equilibrium which maintains an excess of inorganic cations in the extracellular fluid (Treherne, 1962 a, b). In view of the demonstrated permeability of the nerve sheath to ions and molecules (Treherne, 1961 a, b) it was suggested that the enhanced rates of potassium depolarization obtained in desheathed preparations (Hoyle, 1953; Twarog & Roeder, 1956) might be a result, in part at least, of the changed extracellular environment resulting from the disruption of the Donnan equilibrium with the haemolymph (Treherne, 19626). The present investigation represents an attempt to determine the part which such ionic disturbances play in the electrical changes resulting from the removal of the nerve sheath in solutions of varying potassium concentration. In these experiments the rates of potassium depolarization of desheathed preparations irrigated with various solutions have been followed and compared with those obtained in salines in which the cation levels were elevated to correspond to their extracellular concentrations as calculated from the Donnan equilibrium. The synaptic transmission in the desheathed terminal abdominal ganglion in high concentrations of acetylcholine has also been studied in an attempt to throw some light on the factors involved in the development of conduction block under these conditions.

Effects of clonidine on spontaneous and formalin-induced electrical activity of frog dorsal skin nerve

Clonidine, an α2-adrenergic receptor agonist not only induces analgesia but also prolongs the effects of local anesthetic substances. In the present study the effects of clonidine on spontaneous and formalin-induced electrical activity from dorsal skin nerve were investigated. The results showed that clonidine (0.5 mM) decreased the formalin effect on electrical nerve activity whereas clonidi...

Comparison of the effect of quasitrapezoidal and rectangular pulses on bio- electrical activity, calcium spike properties and afterhyperpolarization potentials of Fl cells of Helix aspersa using intracellular recording

While the effect of changes of stimulus waveform (quasitrapezoidal and rectangular current pulses) on nerve activation is clear, but there is no evidence on the effect of quasitrapezoidal pulses on ionic currents of cellular membrane. In the present study, the effect of depolarizing quasi-trapezoidal current pulses, in comparison with that of depolarizing rectangular current pulses, on firing...

A comparative study on soleus H reflex parameters using vertebral column and peripheral nerve stimulation

Although low-threshold transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a modality used for control of pain, but its effect in the control of spasticity and change of excitability of a motor neuron is controversial. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of 15-min tripolar TENS of vertebral column and bipolar TENS of common peroneal nerve (300 µs width, 50 Hz) on synap...

Nicotinomid Adenin Dinucleotide Phosphate-Diaphorase (NADPH-d) Activity and CB-28 kDa Immunoreactivity in Spinal Neurons of Neonatal Rats after a Peripheral Nerve Lesion

Our previous studies have shown that median and ulnar nerve lesion induced calbindin (CB) immunoreactivity in some injured motoneurons in developing rats. Motoneuron death induced by sciatic nerve transection in neonatal rats has been related to induction of neuronal isoform of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). The present study investigated whether expression of CB and nicotinomid adenin dinucleot...
